I haven’t tumblred for a while and now I actually understood why. We’ve spent 4 months talking about cool and I am sure there’s still more to explore about it and go way deeper. But I have already killed some kind of a part of myself that was curious in the very beginning of the semester what kind of animal cool was. I know that it is impossible to learn everything about cool and I don’t really want to. It has to stay mysterious, dark in shadows. I don’t want to take it into the light and kill it for myself.
There will always be demand for cool. There will always be supply for cool. There will always be market of cool. However, right now the market efficiency has fallen…At least mine for sure.
During our lesson on Thursday I’ve realized something. There’s a connection between the stratification of the society, stability of the state and cool. Society can be divided into several categories:elite, upper class, middle class, lower class, marginals, lumpenproletariers. We’ve said that cool comes from poor=lower class, lumpens. I would personally add marginals. This term is used to describe a man whose position in the society, his lifestyle, outlook, background, etc. do not fit into the general mass. This concept has appeared in American sociology in the 1920s to describe the situation of immigrants who couldn’t to new social conditions.
The middle class plays a special, major role in the society, it can be metaphorically ”equalled” to the function of the spine in the human body, through which it maintains the balance and stability. In the middle class there are usually the ones who have the economic independence or a clearly marked career guidance. And these are the functions that society is not only highly valued for but also highly rewarded. The scientists, priests, doctors, lawyers, middle managers, bankers and entrepreneurs make the social core of society. Where there is no middle class, or it has not yet been formed, the society is unstable.
The problem with the middle class is that they can afford not only essentials for their existence like food and shelter, but they can buy luxury goods, they can travel around the world, etc. Cool come from poor who can’t afford the newest, so they create something cool. We’ve come right now to the society where 70-80% of people is middle class in highly-developed countries like America, France, Germany, Switzerland, etc…I feel that’s why we’ve kind of lost that feeling of cool. I’ve already presented my vision of cool nowadays so I am not going to write it here all over again.
There’s always a square that we have to get out from, there’s always something we can rebel against. To my mind, cool cannot be killed. It takes many guises but always with a mask of cool put on.But as all creatures on the Earth it needs some rest. Probably now is that time. For me, too =)
